People are always minutes away from a break through. Some try until they succeed but the truth is many people don’t. They stop because it isn’t happening fast enough or what they thought may fail to happen.
What is resilience? Why is it important?
Psychological Resilience is the ability to mentally and emotionally cope up with the crisis or return back to the pre-crisis state. In simple, Resilience is the ability to bounce back from life challenges and difficulties. Significant sources of stress in a person life may include family or relationship problem, financial crisis, health problem, problem at work place and so on.
People who lack in resilience are more prone to feel overwhelmed or helpless .They use poor coping strategies such as avoidance, isolation and self- medication which are extremely unhealthy.
People with poor resilience are at risk of attempting suicide.
Building Resilience
Building Resilience involves thoughts and behavior which a person can learn and develop. Building up resilience doesn’t mean the person may never face difficulty or distress. They develop a quality to bounce back from the crisis event.
Stay connected with relationships
Prioritize relationship. Connecting with people empathetically and with good understanding help you know that you are not alone in the midst of difficulties. Choose relationship which validates your feeling and person who cares about you. Focus on finding trustworthy and compassionate relationship. This is so important because may people isolate themselves after any grief or loss.
Join support groups
People may join support groups like civic groups, faith based communities and other local organization that offers coping strategies and help to reclaim faith after any loss or crisis.
Physical health
Physical health and mental health are apparently interconnected .Self-care is the legitimate practice for maintaining mental health and building resilience. Promoting positive lifestyle factors such as proper nutrition, good sleep, Regular exercise and hydration can strengthen body to adapt and cope up with stress, reduce emotions like anxiety and depression.
Practice Mindfulness
Journalism (writing down your thoughts), Yoga and meditation, religious practice like prayer help understand the present situation, restore hope and help deal with situations.
Avoid negative practices
There are proven facts that many people indulge themselves in alcoholism, drugs and other substance to deal with stress and this is found to be ineffective and unhealthy. Focus on how to manage stress rather than completely hiding it out.
Be active
Acknowledging and actively accepting the emotions .Discovering yourselves the way to deal and return back to pre- crisis state. Questioning yourselves such as” what can I do about my problem.”
Move towards the goal
Setting up realistic goals and regularly following it .Develop a positive thought that a “Simple step I keep today are my biggest footprints tomorrow”. Develop SMART goals. Grief support groups may be helpful for some people.
Embrace Healthy thoughts
How you think is, how you feel and this shows how resilient you are, when you are faced with obstacles. You may not be able to change the things back but can realize how to bring back normal or break the obstacles happening. Identify irrational thinking and assume that the world is out to get you .For instance; if you feel something overwhelmed, it is not an indicator of your future happenings. Think positive and stay positive.
Accept Change
Many people face difficulty in accepting the change. Changes keep changing!! It is about how you accept change and move henceforth. Accepting circumstances can help you focus on circumstances that you can alter.
Learning from past
Looking back on what was helpful during the past event help you learn for better tomorrow. This is true in case of life struggles. Remind yourselves where you have found struggles, where you was able to find strength and what you have learnt from that experience.
Helping others
Develop Altruistic behavior (helping others without expecting back anything).Be a volunteer to support your known or unknown friend in need. This helps to develop self-worth, connect with other people and build up resilience.
Seeking professional Help
Seek mental health professionals during times when you are not able to function or behave normally or unable perform daily activities after any stressful event or crisis situation.
